Hengyang, in Hunan Province, is a calm, student-friendly city with a lower cost of living than China’s big coastal hubs—great for focusing on studies. Set along the Xiang River and close to Mount Heng (Nanyue) for weekend hikes, it’s easy to get around with cheap buses, taxis, and ride-hailing; high-speed trains connect you to Changsha in about an hour and to Guangzhou/Shenzhen in a few hours. Areas around campus are packed with affordable eateries, study cafés, stationery shops, and supermarkets. You’ll find plenty of Hunan cuisine (famous for bold, spicy flavors) plus Muslim-friendly/halal restaurants and small international groceries near student neighborhoods. Summers are hot and humid; winters are mild to cool—light layers and a warm jacket are enough. Overall, Hengyang offers a safe, welcoming environment and authentic Chinese culture—ideal for international students starting their journey in China.

Hunan cuisine is famous for bold, spicy flavors—think stir-fried meats, smoky chilies, and plenty of aromatics—so eating out is lively and affordable around campus. You’ll also find Muslim-owned spots (look for the 清真 “Qingzhen” halal sign) such as Xinjiang/Lanzhou noodle shops with hand-pulled beef noodles, grilled kebabs, pilaf, and fresh naan. Most places can tone down the heat if you ask, and there are plenty of chicken, beef, fish, and vegetarian options. Student canteens are the cheapest (about ¥12–25 per meal), small restaurants ¥20–40, and halal kitchens typically ¥25–45. Import mini-marts and delivery apps make it easy to get dates, spices, and other halal pantry items. Overall, food is budget-friendly, with a typical monthly spend of ¥800–1,200 depending on how often you cook vs. eat out.

If you want a short tip list under it, add:

  • “少辣 / shǎo là” (less spicy) or “不辣 / bù là” (no spice).

  • “不放猪肉 / bú fàng zhūròu.”

  • 清真 signs or “Muslim Restaurant” near student areas.

On-campus halal canteen (清真): pork-free menu with beef/chicken options and student pricing.

Pakistani restaurant near the university: authentic biryani, karahi, BBQ, naan—within walking distance.

Humid subtropical; hot, humid summers (28–33 °C), mild winters (5–10 °C); wettest Apr–Jun; snow rare
